Walking Grades
Every Marauders walk or activity includes a Walking Grade to help you decide whether it feels right for you. Our grades run from 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most demanding.
The grade is a general guide based on things like distance, terrain, hills, pace and overall effort. Weather and ground conditions can also make a walk feel easier or harder on the day.
If you are unsure which walk is right for you, please get in touch. We would always rather help you choose the right activity than have you worry about getting it wrong.
Grade: 1
Duration: ~2 hrs
Distance: 1-2 miles
Introductory
A gentle and welcoming place to start.
These walks are designed to feel approachable and low pressure. They are shorter, easy underfoot, accessible to all and taken at a relaxed pace. They include an extended post-walk social break at a local café.
Grade 1 walks are a good option if you are new to the Marauders, just getting back into walking, recovering from illness/injury, building confidence or simply looking for something social and manageable.
Grade: 2
Duration: ~3 hrs
Distance: 2-3 miles
Easy
Comfortable and manageable for most people.
These walks may be a little longer or include some uneven ground, but they should still feel accessible for most people with a basic level of fitness and mobility.
Grade 2 walks are a good next step if you want something steady and supportive without it feeling too demanding.
Grade: 3
Duration: ~4hrs
Distance: 4-5 miles
Leisurely
A bit more distance, effort or variety.
These walks may include mixed terrain, some hills, a steadier pace or a longer time on your feet. You do not need to be an expert walker, but you should feel reasonably comfortable being active for a sustained period.
Grade 3 walks are a good fit if you are ready for a bit more challenge and want to keep building confidence and stamina.
Grade: 4
Duration: ~5hrs
Distance: 5-8 miles
Challenging
More demanding and better suited to confident walkers.
These walks may involve steeper sections, rougher ground, more rural, longer distances or a stronger pace. A good level of fitness and confidence on varied terrain is likely to help.
Grade 4 walks are best for those who already enjoy regular walking and feel comfortable taking on something tougher.
Grade: 5
Duration: ~7 hrs / full day
Distance: 7-10 miles
Strenuous
Our most demanding walks.
These walks are likely to involve the toughest combination of distance, hills, terrain, pace or overall effort. They are best suited to confident walkers who are already comfortable with more physically demanding routes.
If you are new to Marauders or unsure whether a Grade 5 walk is right for you, please contact us first and we can help guide you.
A few things to keep in mind
Our Walking Grade is here to give you a helpful guide, but it will never tell the full story. Each of our planned walks will have its own detailed breakdown of the route itself and other useful information about what you can expect but the conditions on the day itself play a big part too. The weather changes, as does your personal health and feelings on the day.
If in doubt, ask. We are happy to help you choose something that feels right for you.
Not sure where to begin?
If you are new to Marauders or returning to walking after a break, it is usually best to start with an easier walk and build up from there.
It is far better to finish feeling stronger than expected than to take on something that leaves you struggling.
The main thing is to get involved, enjoy it, and build from there.
