This year our annual Summer trip takes us all the way to Aberystwyth where a group of around 30 Marauders will be venturing through mid Wales for a jam-packed few days together. Our plan includes a stop-off at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre to explore the lower reservoir, damn and pumping stations, a great walk planned where we’ll be conquering the ‘Aberystwyth Twin Peaks’ whilst exploring the trails, historic landmarks, sights and scenery of the town, together with a visit to the National Library of Wales and finishing off with a visit to the Dolaucothi Gold Mine National Trust site.

On the day

So far we have around 30 Marauders taking the trip this year but there is room for more. If you’d like to join us, get in touch. We’ve put an outline plan together for the trip and primary group but, as always, everyone is free to adjust their timings and schedules to suit.

Day 1 – Wednesday 22nd July
There will be a minibus leaving Llantrisant Leisure Centre car park at 9:15. Some of the guys are driving up and can offer lifts if required.
There are limited seats still available on the minibus and so if you’d like to secure one call Greg on 07484-748499 as soon as possible.

On the way up, we’ll be taking a mid-way break at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre outside of Rhayader, arriving at approximately 11:30am. After an hour or two of exploring the lower reservoir, damn, pumping stations and visitor centre we’ll be taking the scenic route past the upper reservoirs and over the Cambrian mountains to Aberystwyth; aiming to be there by 3:30pm. Once checked in at our University accommodation we’ll be exploring the town, it’s promenade and heading out for an evening meal.

Day 2 – Thursday 23rd July
We’ll be setting off at 10am from the University campus on our main 8-mile Twin Peaks walk around Aberystwyth. We’ll be guided by our very own John P-J who will be telling us some great stories as we walk around his old stomping ground. We’ll even get to famously ‘Kick-the-Bar’. There will be ample opportunity to stop for breaks along the way and so no packed lunches required. We’ll be celebrating our achievement at the top of Constitution Hill.

Once finished it’s a quick change/shower before we head back to town for our evening meal.

Day 3 – Friday 24th July
After a leisurely breakfast we have a visit to the national Library of Wales arranged for us at 10am (some culture!) before it’s back on the bus for a 12:00pm departure for the short journey to the National Trusts’ Dolaucothi Gold Mine site – National Trust Dolaucothi Site Map. The site offers some great walks and an optional tour of the mine that will have to be pre-booked. It’s expected that we’ll be leaving Dolaucothi at around 4:30pm for our journey home; arriving back in Llantrisant for around 6/6:30pm.

Accommodation
Most of the guys will be staying at Aberystwyth University Halls of Residence. Pre-booking is necessary and if you’d like to join us, please make contact with Greg on 07484-748499. The cost is £42pppn for a single room of £54pppn for a double room. There are limited spaces available so please be quick if you’d like to take a room.
