Fforddlas Barn Bunkhouse & Camping Trip

We’ve hired out the Fforddlas Barn in Builth Wells for a mini camping/bunkhouse trip for a few days whilst we explore and walk around the local area.

You can either stay at the Barn (limited spaces so get in touch as soon as you can if you’d like to stay) or park your campervan for free in the yard outside.

We have 2 walks planned for the trip and even if you don’t plan on staying or camping with us, you can join us for the walks, as follows –

Day 1 – Elan Valley Reservoir walk – Elan Valley

Day 2 – Wye Valley Walk – Wye Valley

On the day

This is a ‘Pick n Mix’ trip where you’re free to join a group of Marauders that will be staying over for 2 nights/3 days at The Barn or in your Campervan or you can just turn up at one or both of the planned walks.

There are limited spaces still available at The Barn which costs £20pppn if you’d like to stay. Details here – The Barn, Fforddlas – and please get in touch with Greg on 07484-748499 if you’d like to reserve a place.

Day 1 – Tuesday 23rd June
Meet at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre where we’ll be embarking at 10:30am on an 8-mile walk around the reservoirs – details here – Elan Valley Walk

For those staying over we’ll be organising a self-catered buffet for our evening meal.

Day 2 – Wednesday 24th June
Meet at the Groe car park in Builth Wells before taking on a full day, 10 mile walk around the Wye Valley starting at 10am – details here – Wye Valley Walk

For those staying over we’ll be having a meal at the White Horse pub in Builth Wells at 7:30pm before heading back to The Barn.

Day 3 – Thursday 25th June
There are no firm plans for the day – you’ll be free to explore more or head home.

Accommodation
The Barn at Fforddlas has room to sleep 11 in twin rooms/single beds or on bed settees. It has shared bathrooms and showers with a communal kitchen and lounge. Outside seating/dining area available too. Price is £20pppn. Contact Greg on 07484-748499 if you want to reserve a place. There are limited spaces available so please be quick if you’d like to take a room.

Registration

You will be asked for your name, your mobile telephone number along with an emergency contact name and number. If you have any relevant medical conditions or medication that may be relevant to declare, please pass this information to the event leader during registration.

Be Prepared – Health, Wellbeing & Weather
Participation in this event is entirely at your own risk, and it is your sole responsibility to ensure you are physically fit and well enough to take part. This includes being appropriately dressed for the event/weather and carrying any personal or emergency medication you may require during the activity.

Dogs
We would recommend that no dogs be brought on this trip.

What to bring

Our walks on this trip are are graded at Grade 4-5
Designed for 5–10 miles in rural areas with steep sections and rough ground.

  • Footwear: Waterproof walking boots with ankle support are essential for rural, rougher, or “toughest” terrain.
  • Clothing: A full layering system (base, mid, and waterproof outer shell) to manage 5–7 hours of exposure.
  • Refreshments: 1.5–2 litres of water and a substantial packed lunch for these full-day efforts.
  • Safety: Any personal medication or small first-aid items you may need while away from easy access points.


For those staying at The Barn in Fforddlas – you will need –

  • Sleeping Arrangements – You will be either sleeping in a single bed/twin room or on a bed settee. Bedding is provided. You will need overnight bag/toiletries/towel/change of clothing etc…
  • Facilities – The Barn has shared bathrooms, toilets and showers. It has a shared lounge and communal kitchen. There is outside seating available too.
  • Food & Drink – We will aim to buy and share some general breakfast food – cereals, bread, tea, coffee etc… If you have any particular dietary requirements, please bring your own food. On the first evening we will be organising a buffet-style dinner where you’ll be asked to contribute some foodstuff.

Volunteering support

This event requires some volunteering support to make it run smoothly and we’d love to hear from you if you are able to lend a hand on the day. This week we are looking for:

Car Sharing – If you either need a lift or can offer a lift to anyone, please get in touch. We’ll organise car-sharing a little closer to the time.

Walk & Talk support – On the day we’d like some help for people to assist the walk leaders and keep an eye on the group.
